Northern Exposure

Erongo Wilderness Lodge has had some superb wildlife sightings recently including 2 Pangolins in the past month. For anyone that hasn't seen one (which is most people) the Pangolin is an amazing looking fellow, covered in protective scales and fond of eating ants. In fact if memory serves, the Pangolin is the only mammal to have scales. Both sightings were with guests.

The local Honey Badger is making himself quite common and guests are having some regular sightings. Honey Badgers are famed for their short tempers and a sense of importance exaggerated by their short stature. This particular Honey Badger was recently seen chasing off a startled Ardwolf who had crossed his path.

Viewing from the elevated restaurant at night has been amazing. A family of Porcupines have been around every night in the last week. They are now completely relaxed and spend a lot of time being photographed. There is also a stunning African Wild Cat who has made this his regular stop off in the evening and seems to hang around until the Genet arrives later on in the evening.

In short, plenty to occupy guests until supper is ready. Regular game sightings on drives have also been good with Mountain Zebra being spotted on most drives at the moment.

Following a week's closure at the start of the year for maintenance, the lodge has recently installed a satellite internet connection, and now has a new, designated guest computer available in the gift shop, for guests to check their emails. This is billed at N$1/min.

The menus are being updated at Erongo with guests offered a choice of two 2 main courses instead of the set meal for dinner. At the end of the evening guests will now return to their rooms and find their beds have been turned down.

There has been great wildlife sightings at the lodge, which have been enhanced by the copious rain levels – the area is looking beautiful and green! The birdlife in particular has been prolific with lots of yellow-billed kites seen circling around the surrounding kopjies. The restaurant has also been having regular sightings of porcupine and genet at night. A new small spotlight is shining straight down to the rocks outside the restaurant.
